There are structures in the head including the jaws that are potential surgical hazards. In the back ends of the lower jaw (mandible), there is a main nerve trunk that has to be avoided during implant placements or during bone regeneration grafting. Compression of the nerve trunk or any kind of damage to it whatsoever will result in the possibility of having permanent numbness in the region innervated by the nerve. It is possible to accurately predict the position of the mandibular nerve canal by utilizing standard and specialized x-ray imaging so that where surgery is possible, it does so with very little risk.
